You’ve Got to Stand For Something

Arron Tippin and Buddy Brock wrote this song that became Tippin’s breakout record. With what we are facing in the Presidential Election that will be decided on November 8, 2016 Tippin’s words ring louder and louder every day:

You’ve Got to Stand For Something

Now Daddy didn’t like trouble, but if it came along

Everyone that knew him knew which side that he’d be on

He never was a hero, or this county’s shinin’ light

But you could always find him standing up

For what he thought was right

He’d say you’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

You’ve got to be your own man not a puppet on a string

Never compromise what’s right and uphold your family name

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

Now we might have been better off or owned a bigger house

If Daddy had done more givin’ in or a little more backing down

But we always had plenty just living his advice

Whatever you do today you’ll have to sleep with tonight

He’d say you’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

You’ve got to be your own man not a puppet on a string

Never compromise what’s right and uphold your family name

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

Now I know that things are different than they were in Daddy’s days

But I still believe what makes a man really hasn’t changed

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

You’ve got to be your own man not a puppet on a string

Never compromise what’s right and uphold your family name

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

We have to look no further than the rhetoric that is being spewed by both sides in this Presidential contest to realize that pressure from various groups is what is directing and controlling the message and sound bites we see every minute of the day in the non-stop cable news networks (this reference does not refer just to CNN but to all of the cable networks). Add to that the impact of social media and the instant dissemination of information and rumor. No longer are “news stories” fact checked before they are released. Time becomes the driving force. Who can get that “special moment” out first? How many times in the past few months have you seen the words “BREAKING NEWS” only to have the news organization come back with a “clarification” after the “facts” become better known?

We have seen a number of elected officials come out and criticize Donald Trump for his comments only to walk back that criticism days later for fear of how voters in their Districts/States might react. Others have made their feelings known and stuck to their position. Gone are the days for many elected officials when doing the “right thing” trumped (no pun intended) doing things the “right way”. The same can be said of supporters of Hillary Clinton when elected officials condemn her actions and then defend her. Both sides in this contest seem to have adopted the Bill Clinton mantra of “Are you going to believe me or are you going to believe you’re lying eyes?” The last line in the second verse should be a reminder for us all “Whatever you do today you’ll have to sleep with tonight”.

At some point the time comes when WE THE PEOPLE need to start standing for something again and quit falling for the sound bites and half-truths coming from so many different directions. When that happens perhaps those we have elected will not feel the absolute need to bow to political whim and they will once again stand for something rather than falling for anything.
